2006 Audio Archives

Audio is in MP3 format. To download it to play later, right click on its link and opt to save the file on your computer. To play a file immediately, left click on its link (how immediate it plays depends on the software on your computer and the speed of your Internet connection).

Shows consist of three segments: Technical Discussions for the first half hour, brief User Group meeting announcements, then audience call-in for the second half hour. We thank Streamload for hosting many of these files. Starting in August 2005, WBAI archives shows in MP3 format and keeps them on-line for three months. We also have text summaries of recent shows and older shows.

December 13 Can Vista possibly be a failure in the marketplace? Alfred said yes. Many people could care less about it. Should you buy a PC now or wait for Vista. HP is giving away free coupons for Vista to anyone who buys their PCs from Oct 26,2006 to March 15, 2007. Other PC vendors are charging for the Vista upgrades. Still more critical bug fixes from Microsoft - yesterday was "patch Tuesday". Hank reported on free anti-virus software for server versions of Windows. We discussed where to get the next version of the free AVG ant-virus program. More... Joe, Hank, Alfred, Michael 16Kbps

December 6 Apple released 22 bug fixes for OSX. The Supreme Court is going to examine the "obviousness" of patents. Epson is shutting down makers of clone printer cartridges. The right way to clean an LCD screen (hint: it's 50/50 water and something). Large flat panel TVs are now plasma and LCD. But SED TVs have been on the horizon for a long time. Alfred said their picture is great, but... Hank found a bug in IE 7 for which there is no fix in XP Home Edition. Now that Vista is available to corporate America, will they buy it? Many current PCs used by business can't run Vista at all. Plus we disparaged this new overpriced version of Windows.  More... Joe, Hank, Alfred 16Kbps

November 1 We thank everyone that pledged money to WBAI during the recent fund raising drive. Making up for last weeks pre-emption, we covered a lot of short topics. Alfred, Michael and Hank said to buy now. Olivia will soon be reviewing Quickens Medical Manager. If you'd like to contact her about it email olivia@pcradioshow.orgNote: The links here mistakenly pointed to last weeks show at first. This was corrected Nov. 3rd at 11AM. More... October 25 The show was pre-empted this week by WBAI
October 18 Fund raising and virtual machines. Yes, for the third week in a row, we asked our audience to pledge money to support non-commercial listener-supported WBAI. For a pledge of $150 we offer one year of tech support from everyone on the show. For a pledge of $65 we offered PC-Cillin 2006 antivirus from Trend Micro. But not a normal version, this version is on steroids. It can be installed on three computers and comes with a free upgrade to the soon-to-be released PC-Cillin 2007. Also for a $65 pledge we offered a CD with our free recommended software and a second CD with free virtual machine software. Not sure what virtual machine software is? Then listen to the show, we discussed the subject at length. There were no listener phone calls. On the show were Joe King, Hank Kee, Alfred Poor and Michael Horowitz. Since the show was on during a Mets baseball playoff game, Stevie, our engineer played the entire "Who's On First" comedy routine by Abbott and Costello after the show. Its on our copy of the show. For backing up files we offered a package of three backup programs from NTI. As we did last week, we also offered our "toolkit", a couple CDs with tons of free, recommended software. All the premiums can be had now as you read this, except the NTI backup software which was only available while the show was on the air. There were no listener phone calls. On the show were Joe King, Hank Kee, Alfred Poor, Michael Horowitz and Danny Burstein. We are pre-empted next week and will back on the air October 25th. More...
